There have been recent developments in the medical equipment field that signal new opportunities for advanced composite and high performance plastic tools in the replacement of traditional metals such as 17-4 Stainless steel. The surgical hardware field has developed rapidly over the past few decades and now represents a large dynamic market with many special requirements for stiff and light weight material candidates. The combination of molding ease and high mechanical properties makes carbon fiber reinforced composites a natural choice for replacing difficult to machine metals in both components and surgical hardware designs.

A number of projects have been undertaken at Lucas Industries to support metal replacement endeavors with weight reduction and improved radiographic transmission being prime criteria for the new products.
